First Grade is Finished

I am so ready for summer, so why is it that when I write that it brings a lump to my throat?

Maybe because of this:
The three enjoying donuts at the Safeway Starbucks this morning before school. The Barista surprised them with strawberry smoothies! She is so nice. If you are local, you know who I'm talking about :)
Is it really the last day of school allready??
Or maybe that lump in my throat is because of this:

One the THE GREATEST teachers (and friends) ever, Mrs. W. She loves our family like her own and goes above and beyond for all her students. We were so blessed to have her this year.

Can it really be over??

Yes, it is. And I better get used to the idea!

I just have to say that I am amazed by all the growth I've seen in Will this year. He has especially enjoyed learning to read. In fact when I asked him what he liked best about Mrs. W. he said, "she teaches us to read, and I love reading!" Ahhhh, a boy after my heart. The highlight of this past week was getting him his very own library card. He is so excited to use it to check out his own books this summer and continue reading.

Last day of school! Hoorah! Hooray!

Now

Craig and I got to go out to dinner and do a little shopping last night. It was a special and wonderful date and we reminisced a lot about the past 10 years and just enjoyed out time together. I'm so glad we got a picture of just the two of us....that doesn't happen very often! Will took this one. The truck is not the greatest backdrop, but oh well.
And then there's this one that just brings me back to "now". Here we are trying to be all cute and lovey for the picture (which Wyatt took) and Anna totally snuck in the background. As much fun as it is to reminisce, I am very thankful for NOW. Our lives are busy and full, but I love every minute!

Our Love Story

Craig and I met in August ’95. We were both freshman standing in the parking lot of WPC waiting to load up and set off for our freshman class retreat. I remember spotting Craig across the parking lot. He stood out with his sun bleached blonde hair, and tanned muscular arms. But what I remember the most was how he had a quiet confidence about him. Everyone was trying to fit in, and there of course were the clowns, the people running around, being silly, the shy ones, and the ones you could tell, thought they were pretty cool. But Craig, I noticed was different. He was quiet, but in a confident sort of way. I could tell he wasn’t really shy, yet he wasn’t boastful or attracting unnecessary attention to himself.

I decided I HAD to meet him.

The opportunity came during a round of speed uno. A bunch of us were sitting in a circle, my friend and roomie Christi sat in-between Craig and I, and when he asked our names, we introduced ourselves. I remember hearing him ask Christi again the pronunciation of my name (Lin-zay, not Lin-zee). And I hoped he would remember me.

A week or two later we were with a group of friends at the riverside in downtown Portland. The group broke up for a while and Craig and I walked together. It was then we had “the talk”. You know, the “I like you and would like to further our relationship” talk. It’s so funny to me how nervous I remember being.

We were an “item” for a couple months. But being in a small college where everybody knows everybody’s business started getting to me. The year pervious I had broken up with a boyfriend whom I dated for over a year and I’d told myself I wasn’t going to rush into anything at college. I got a little freaked out at how fast I was falling for him. So, I did the unthinkable.
I broke up with Craig.

We were broken up for a couple months, and during those two months Craig probably did one of the wisest things he could do. He backed off. We were still friends, of course and hung out together, but he gave me time. He even went out on a “date” (sort of) with a girl from his home town over Christmas break. It was then I started asking myself, what the heck was I doing? I had the time I needed. I had come to the conclusion that I really liked this guy. I didn’t want him dating other girls. I wanted him back as my boyfriend. So, when school started up again in January we sat in C Lounge and had another “talk”. This time it seemed much more comfortable. I shared with him some of my fears and how I wanted this relationship to start. He shared with me that while he loved being my friend, he really wanted to be my boyfriend.

On our first Valentines Day Craig took me out to a nice restaurant in downtown Portland. On the way there he said he had a song to play for me. It was Geoff Moore’s “If You Could See What I See”. I remember feeling like I was dreaming, a little dizzy, and totally taken aback. I knew he loved me and I had to admit, I was falling in love with him. It was a rather bold move, I thought, as we had only been back together for about a month. But that’s one of the things I love about Craig. It was one of my most favorite moments. That was the song we had sung at our wedding.

We continued dating for almost two years, then in the fall of ’97 at Button Pond, Craig got down on his knee with a gorgeous ring, and said, “Lin, I want you to be my best friend for life, starting today. Will you marry me?”

Of course I said YES!!!
We then had a BBQ picnic which I couldn’t eat because I was too excited. May 30, 1998 we were married and finished out our senior year of college as newlyweds along with three of our best friends. That year was not without challenges, and I learned so much, but I can honestly say it was one of my best years ever.
(so sorry about the terrible picture quality. I do not have a scanner, but I really wanted to include some pics!)
Craig’s 21st birthday was in June, and we had been married not even a month. His favorite dessert is chocolate chip cheesecake so I set out the evening before to make it. I started fairly late and by the time the cheesecake was done, it was past time for bed. The thing is, for the best results you have to turn the oven off and let the cheesecake sit and come to room temperature before putting it in the fridge. I decided to go to bed and just set my alarm for an hour or two, get up, put the cheesecake in the fridge and go back to sleep. When I got up to put the cheesecake away I was still half asleep. Somehow I managed to drop the entire thing upside down on the floor of our kitchen. It was completely ruined and I was so devastated. Trying so hard to be a good loving wife, making my new husband his favorite cheesecake, I felt like a failure. I went to bed sobbing and Craig was probably laughing inside. He just rubbed my hair and told me it was ok.

(By the way, I made a SECOND cheesecake the next day and it turned out well. And I totally laugh about that story, now!)

God has blessed me beyond what I could have ever asked for during my married years with Craig. Craig is my support. He is always strong when I feel weak. He never complains. He provides for our family, and wants to see me happy. But most importantly he seeks the Lord and inspires me to walk closer with my Father.

Dear Craig,

Love is listening to me ramble about my day, tell stories about all the insignificant things the kids said, or describe in detail how my grocery shopping went. Love knows just where to massage my head when I get a migraine. Love is bringing me a towel hot from the dryer when I get out of the bath. Love is making a late night run to DQ for blizzards so I can sit on the couch and not miss Survivor. Love is a pot of coffee every morning that I didn’t have to brew. Love is getting up a little earlier to run, so that I can have an extra 20 minutes to sleep before mine. Love is not freaking out when I go into a too tired, too hormonal, too overwhelmed, sobbing episode. Love is an empty dishwasher when I go to unload it. Love is indulging me in my never ending furniture re-arranging ideas (especially when you know it’s going to end up just like it was to begin with). Love is going on family walks and talking and dreaming together. Love is giving the kids baths after I’ve had a long day, and taking the extra time to brush Anna’s hair and put lotion on her, just because she’s your baby girl. Love is taking the boys fishing even though it means more snagged lines and lost lures and less time for you to fish. Love is being a perfectionist, (cause you know I’m not!). Love is sending me an email just because. Love is telling me I’m beautiful, despite the pounds I’ve gained and the stretch marks I bear. Love is hauling up extra water to the trailer so that I can have a shower when we go hunting. Love is having a husband who prays with me everyday and keeps our family grounded in Christ. You, my love, are all these things and so much more. I love having YOU for a best friend! Ten of the most wonderful years of my life have been spent as your wife. Happy Anniversary!

Mini-Vacation

The past 4 days we have been in GP on a mini vacation. Craig had a 4 day weekend and we were planning our annual morel mushroom hunting trip. Friday we were informed that there was about 2 inches of snow where we intended on camping and hiking the mountain side searching for 'shrooms. After hearing this I panicked a little. There is nothing like camping in the snow, believe me, I have done it, and it really isn't something I wish to repeat. So, after much deliberation my sweet husband unpacked our trailer and we decided to head down for some time with Ama and Papa at their house, instead of in the 'great outdoors'.
We arrived Saturday morning and made it to the river for the boat races. It was the annual 'Boatnik' weekend, so we partook of some of those festivities and had a great time.
Here we are watching the boats whiz by....and below is a picture of Craig and 'bucky button'. (Papa's deer mount that he just got back). Isn't he a beaut!?!
After I took this picture I asked Craig why he was holding his arms like that. "So I could show how big it was" he replied. It really is a nice big one!
Below are the workers of Mento's Restaurant (their chosen name). Ama has these Pampered Chef kids aprons and hats and all three kiddos played restaurant for the majority of the time we spent inside.

Is she not the cutest chef you've ever seen??
And here is the menu. This is one of the things I absolutely LOVE about kids. I don't know why but it just makes me smile. I might actually be sad when he starts spelling words correctly :)
So, remember how I said we didn't go camping, like we'd planned? Well, we just couldn't resist a trip up to the mountains for the day to check out all this snow and see if perhaps we could round up a few yummy morels. So we get there and there is NO SNOW. It is actually really dry, and the sun is peeking through the clouds. At first we were so disappointed that we didn't just go in the first place. But we made the most of it, ate our lunches and then set off over the hill.

We hiked and hiked. Came back to the van. Drove down to the lake. Hiked some more. And found 2 mushrooms! We were actually glad it this piont. Guess the shroomin' wasn't at it's peak yet this year. Who knows. It was really cold, and as we left it started raining and thundering. So, all was good.
And I even got the annual picture of the kids on this mound of dirt. I have at least three years now and by the time they are teenagers I hope to have a bunch of years worth of pictures in this exact spot.
Below is one of Wyatt on a huge fallen tree. All in all it was a great time in the great outdoors. The kids loved it and were so in their element.

Glad to be home!

Where has the sunshine gone?

I'm grateful for the rain and cooler weather, and how everything is so green around here right now..... but I so enjoyed the sunshine and hot temps we had last week. I am more than ready for the warm sunshine to return.
Here are some pics of Wy-boy and Annie-girl playing in the sprinkler last week.

Today was Wyatt's last day of school....so summer has officially started for him! I actually was so cold today I turned on the heat on for a bit! We go from air conditioners and fans one week, to clicking on the heat the next. :)
Memorial Day weekend always seems to be our real kick-off to summer. Hope you enjoy your LONG weekend!

from skirt to shoulder bag

A while ago I found a link with a pattern for a really cute shoulder bag and had been toying with the idea of attemping one of my own. This was once again and idea I stole from Michelle's blog (thanks!) and she said it was easy and quick. Well, yesterday I was going through my clothes, sorting and getting rid of things, and I came across this skirt I have had for about a year now and never worn. I have debated getting rid of it before, but it is a really nice skirt and I kept thinking that someday....with the perfect top.... I might be brave enough to wear it. But honestly it fit a little big and it was a little bright. Then, suddenly I thought of the shoulder bag pattern. I decided that while this material in skirt form might be a little much I could probably do a little splash of color for a bag/purse, and so I gave it a try. I wish I had a picture of me WEARING the skirt that I transformed into a purse. But here is what's left of it.
(As I took this picture it totally reminded me of Giselle in Enchanted....when she makes a dress out of his curtains, and they're hanging there with the dress all cut out? It's funny, if you haven't seen it, you really should.) Anyway.....
My sewing skills are VERY limited (like 7th grade home-ec and anything else I have taught myself since then) and I don't always follow directions well, cause I'm always in such a rush to get it done! But I did on this one and it was SUPER easy and fast. I think the final result will be a fun bag for summer-time. And I am already thinking about what kind of fabric I can recycle for my next shoulder bag......
By the way, if you're interested in the instructions go to http://www.tinyhappy.typepad.com/ and click on the tutorial for shoulder bag. It's all there!

Even princesses get thirsty

She just had to wear her princess dress outside to play. Then she got thirsty and tried to drink a spray of water coming from the soaker hose.
She is, however, one of the cutest princesses I've seen. Dirt, water, and all!

Megan 03

Our lunch conversation went something like this:

Me: Do you want a whole or half tuna sandwich?
Wyatt: a half....I mean 2 halves
M: So you want a whole?
W: No, I just want TWO HALVES
M: Well, two halves make a whole
W: No they don't
M: Yes (showing him the bread) if I make a sandwich on whole pieces of bread and cut it in half, that's two halves, which makes a whole.

(He then seems convinced, and continues to watch me make the sandwich)

W: (mumbling) Megan o3
M: What......Megan?
W: No, Megan o3
M: What's Megan o3
W: You know mom, Megan o3, the vitamins?
M: Oh, you mean Omega 3?
W: Yeah!!

I guess at some point I must have mentioned that fish has Omega 3 in it....although I vaugely remember it now!

Moooooo?

Wyatt feeding the calf a bottle at our trip to the Dairy today. They were really quite cute, even if one did nuzzle me with his wet, slobbery nose!

Snapshots

It is always a big goal of mine to capture a really great snapshot of me and my kiddos on Mother's day.

Some years have been better than others. This year was pretty comical. The sun was too bright for Will and Anna was sooo ready for her nap, and not cooperating.

Oh well. This is life with three blessings, for which I am truly thankful. Funny pictures and all!

A Proud Moment

Wyatt "graduated" from pre-school last night (if you can actually call it that :)

There is soooo much I could say about these past two years. But it all seems unimportant as I look at the picture of my soon-to-be kindergartner and realize how much he's grown and matured. My heart melts a little, and I try to freeze this memory in my mind forever.

I feel sad, happy and sentimental. But above all I feel really, really, proud.

Laughter is the best medicine

It really is! Here is some of what Wyatt has been saying lately to make me laugh:

1. We've been having a bit of a hard time getting the kids to bed at their usual time since it is staying so light out now. But the other night they were really tired so I was determined to get them in bed at a decent hour even it it was still light out. I told Wyatt to go get in his jammies and get ready for bed and he started freaking out (he had already reached the "meltdown" point) and he turns to me and says through tears in a very dramatic fashion, "mom, what do you think I am, AN OWL???"

get it? cause owls sleep in the daytime?

2. As you can see he has been practicing riding is bike without the training wheels and the other day he was getting frustrated and I hear him say to himself, "that's it, I give up....no I DOUBLE give up!"

3. This morning to Will he says longingly, "Will, I know magic isn't real, but I wish it was, cause I REALLY want to fly."

Wyatt on 2 wheels

Here are a couple quick video clips of Wyatt learing to ride without his training wheels. The first one is actually toward the end of the riding session. You will hear Wyatt's half cry/ half laugh as he had fallen a time too many and was about to call it quits.....for today.

He was much better on the grass and took off on his own and kept his balance well. He'll be two wheeling it like a pro in no time!

Countdown!

21 days of school for Will!!
22 days of school (work) for Craig!!

Bring on summer!!
(can you tell I'm excited?)

What we've been up to

The first graders had their annual field trip to the Zoo. My mom stayed with the little ones so I could have a really fun day being with Will. Thankfully we didn't get rained on, the sun even peaked out now and then! But by the end of the day, I was so wiped out!
Wyatt has been keeping himself occupied with pretzels.
He puts it on his eye and then shouts, "I'm the mayor."
I have no idea why he says that. He's such a goof!

Project time!

With my time to catch up on things this weekend I have been inspired to work on some projects. The biggest being a re-design of our playroom/family room....I'm currently painting the cabinets I bought for toy storage and I'll be sure to show some before and after pictures of the room....... when it's done that is.....which might be a while. Baby steps, right?
Anyway, I saw this CUTE skirt Michelle (a friend of my friend Christi--I know, blog-hopping) make for her daughter several weeks ago. I used the tutorial at Grand Revival Design to make one for Anna. I didn't follow it exactly, though (big suprise!). The pattern was for a size 5-6. And Anna is only 2 so I figured I'd just minus a couple inches off the measurements. Which worked out pretty well for her waist size. But, as I was putting it together I quickly realized that it was going to be WAY too short. I didn't take into account that it has 4 tiers so that was like subtracting 8 inches off the length (this is typical of how I do things). It looked more like a tu-tu than a skirt. So my fix was to add another tier and ruffle. It is very ruffle-y, but not too bad. Anna loves it. As you can see in the first picture there are still a bunch of threads hanging off it because she was so excited to try it on when she saw me sewing it. I used fabric from my tubs, and I'm excited to try another one. I'll do a little better with following instructions next time.
Here's the beautiful model....she happened to have this hand-me-down yellow top which didn't really go with anything. Now it's an outfit!
And just a close up of the finished product!

My Weekend

This weekend Craig and the kiddos headed down south to visit Ama and Papa and gave me one of the bests gifts ever: a whole weekend at home by myself. While my family was enjoying the sunshine, fishing, playing outside on the rope swing, picking wildflowers, swimming in the hot tub, and getting spoiled by Ama and Papa, I was hanging out here in a quiet house with tons of projects on my to-do list.
(Will and Papa, steering the boat)
(an early morning up fishing, makes for a tired boy on the ride home)
Here’s just some of what I accomplished while the fam was away:

I took two nice long walks
I slept in two mornings in a row
I completed 15 layouts in my scrapbooks
I watched two “girly” movies
I spent 4 hours shopping in stores I can’t take my kids to, like TJ Maxx and Spencers Alley
I bought two new cabinets for our playroom
I had my first-ever-in-my-entire-life pedicure. I don’t know why I waited this long. It was heaven!
I changed the sheets on two beds and washed and folded 4 loads of laundry
I cleaned my entire house, even vacuumed out under the couch cushions, and cleaned out all the bathroom drawers
I took out about 7 bags of trash
I went grocery shopping for the next couple weeks
I missed my family so much and was happy to see their smiley faces Sunday evening!
Thank you to my wonderful husband and in-laws! You guys are great. I am a much refreshed mommy!

Another funny

Lately Wyatt and I have been saying the 23 Psalm (after watching that little girl on Godtube---so cute!) and he's been learning some of it. He says the cutest thing though. The last verse where it says, "surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life..." Wyatt says, "surely goodness and love and mommy all the days of my life...." I can't bear to correct him because it is just so cute. And hey, if he wants goodness, love, and mommy all the days of his life, that's ok. Well, at least until he's 18 or so on the mommy thing :)

A Fun Little Meme

What I was doing ten years ago:

I was in my junior year of college and about to be married to my sweetie!

Five snacks I enjoy:
1. cheese and crackers
2. my homemade granola bars
3. a really juicy orange
4. apples or celery with peanut butter
5. chips and salsa or guac

Five jobs I have held:
1. hoeing weeds from onion fields- summers in jr. high
2. Nordstrom – I worked in BP cleaning out dressing rooms and putting the clothes back on the floor, and wrapping gifts in fragrances.
3. Oregon Cherry Growers (my dad’s office, I worked in accounts receivable and, tracking, and did LOTS of filing)
4. US Bank Teller-I worked there for 2 summers after Craig and I were married. My second day as a teller I was robbed! No I’m not kidding! But besides that it was a fun job. I loved playing with money all day.
5. State of Oregon Licensing Board for Clinical Social Workers- I started this job when Craig started student teaching and worked for almost 2 years before having Will, and staying home.

Five habits:
1. Exercising has become a habit. I hate getting up, but I feel so guilty when I don’t.
2. I drink coffee every day
3. I go to the library about once a week
4. I wash my face before going to bed. I can probably count on one hand the number of times I have not done this.
5. I pray out loud in the van on the way to school. If I forget, my kids will remind me.

Five Places I have lived:
I have only lived in three, Dallas, Salem and Portland.

If you are reading this and haven’t already done it, I tag you. But only if you want to be tagged.
I googled myself, just for fun, and besides finding lots of other people with my name, I also found these (click on link below). They look pretty cute. To bad they are out of stock or else I might be tempted to order. I mean, a pair of jeans named after you is pretty cool :)

Friday Funny

You know about my love for Lysol household wipes.....
This morning I found these two in the kitchen. Anna looks up and says, "I want clean!" What could I say, the girl wants to clean!
So I took a picture :)

Wy-boy

It’s been 5 years since God blessed me with my Wyatt Samuel. As I neared the end of my pregnancy, my body swelled up as if I’d been stung by a giant bee, and Wyatt came two weeks early due to my development of toxemia. How relieved I was to have him out and healthy and hold him in my arms. For five years Craig and I have tried our best to teach, shape and guide him. Wyatt has challenged me and caused me to rely on the strength of my Father in heaven, which I count as a blessing. He has also caused me to smile and laugh with joy every day at the unique little boy he is, and the love he shows me. Here is a picture of our boy at age 1:

(Wasn't he the cutest thing??)
I heard this verse at a couple’s retreat Craig and I attended a couple months before Wyatt turned 2 years old. I have clung to it as a promise for Wyatt’s life.

Isaiah 51:11 The ransomed of the Lord will return. They will enter Zion with singing; everlasting joy will crown their heads. Gladness and joy will overtake them, and sorrow and sighing will flee away.

Wyatt is full of energy, passion, and determination. My prayer is that he will use these God given qualities to give glory to God. That he will be passionate for the Lord, all the days of his life. Just a few weeks ago Wyatt and I had a conversation about asking Jesus into his heart. To my knowledge he has never done this in true seriousness. But that evening he repeated a prayer after me and I believe his heart was sincere. Maybe he will ask Jesus into his heart a few times more before it really sinks in. But I know in my heart that he belongs to the Lord.

Wyatt is curious, fearless, and takes things to a whole new level. He is spunky and quite the charmer and loves to laugh. He is musical, artistic, very good with words, and despite being strong-willed, he is oh so easy to LOVE! Wyatt’s name means “brave one” and while we didn’t name him Wyatt for the meaning, he has lived up to truly being our little “brave one”!

(5 years old today!!)

So Happy Birthday to my big 5 year old. You are a blessing to me and so many others!

from boys to men

Last night, after a very fulfilling dinner of Chicken Broccoli Calzone's (thanks, Alysun, my family loves these...see FOOD LOVE for the recipe) carrot sticks and cut up fruit, Will headed over to the fridge, pulled out a yogurt, and scarfed it down. A couple hours later both he and Wyatt were saying they were "starving" and could they please have a snack. I cut up an apple, threw out some carrot sticks, sliced up cheese and a few handfuls of pretzels for all three of them to share. A few minutes later the food had vanished...well all except one lone carrot hanging out on the paper plate.

As I was tucking Will into bed he said, "mom, can you wake me up early tomorrow?" I said, "yes, tomorrow you go with daddy so you'll have to get up a little earlier." And he replied, "well, I need to get up early cause I want to have time to eat a big breakfast.....I'm really hungry!"

So this morning this is what they ate:

Will- one toaster waffle, a homemade hot pocket (eggs, ham and cheese), and a bagel with cream cheese.

Wyatt- (my skimpy eater) 2 toaster waffles and a homemade hot pocket!

Families with older boys have been telling me this was bound to happen sooner or later. But my goodness! Will often eats two packets of oatmeal, plus some toast, a bagel, or yogurt for breakfast! I can see my trips to the grocery store becoming more frequent. These boys are becoming MEN!
